Congressman Sessions – Enemy of Cannabis
Congressman Sessions – Enemy of Cannabis is absolutely worth watching the video and supporting an important effort. The Chairman of the House Rules Committee has gone out of his way to obstruct efforts to legalize cannabis, and blocked reasonable efforts to allow for voting by members of the House.
The Texas Cannabis Industry Association launched an animation Tuesday that broadly attacks Rep. Pete Sessions, R-Texas, who is in the middle of a tough re-election campaign.
Sessions has earned the ire of the pro-cannabis community as the powerful chairman of the House Rules Committee, because he’s blocked any cannabis-related legislation from advancing in the US House in recent years. The ad, which was featured only on social media and online, featured attacks on Sessions’ record on civil rights as scored by theAmerican Civil Liberties Union, immigration and other issues.
Toward the end of the ad, the narrator hits Sessions on cannabis.
“As chairman of the House Rules Committee since 2016, Pete has blocked 36 cannabis reform bills including bipartisan legislation for banking, veterans, patient protections,” the advertisement said.
Patrick Moran, a TCIA board member, told Cannabis Wirethat his group is helping Democratic organizations in Sessions’ congressional district target voters who typically don’t go to the polls in hopes of unseating Sessions. He believes that highlighting Sessions’ anti-cannabis stance as part of a broader message about why he should be ousted could help unseat him.
“I’m hoping that we can make cannabis count for a couple of points that we can really track and those points can make a difference in ultimately unseating him,” Moran said. “But there’s so many other dysfunctional things happening in our politics.”
Recent polls in the race between Sessions and Democrat Colin Allred are within the margin of error. A Sessions spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment.
